Online Offering??
06.28.08
As much as I love technology, I have always fought the idea of online giving. Sure, it's easy and most churches see an increase in giving when they implement the ability for folks to give to the Lord online, but it just doesn't seem to fit right in my theology.
I guess what I can't seem to get over is that our tithes and offerings are a spiritual act of worship. But if we automate that process and distance that act away from weekend worship, it seems to me that we miss something intrinsic to the worshipful act of giving back to God.
And, don't get me started on the temptation to use the credit card for a gift to the Lord!
Am I missing something?
What do you think? We have the ability, should Bridgeway accept online gifts?

I see your point on the credit card! Yikes! Jesus already paid our debts!!!! ;) My opinion is that the 'body' doesn't need artificial parts....Jesus' didn't. Just pass the basket. I could see benefits of technology (like blogging for instance) ;) However, like you mentioned, we would be missing the 'act' of giving back to God. Especially in His house.
An example of tech-too-far. I walked into a church once with 'Greeting kiosks' no joke. They looked like ATM machines (which obviously could've been a possibility!) Pretty sad when we don't personally 'greet' each other at the door, but rather point to 'Pam' on the computer screen.

I agree with you about the online offerings. My theology also does not jive with giving to my church online.
I am a technology guy. I do most of my bills online and I buy almost all my gifts over the internet. Giving is not a bill. God does not send me an invoice or send me to collections when a payment is late. This is not a business transaction but an act of worship. But what if it is not treated as business?
I suppose if someone had it in their heart that they were truly worshiping when they hit the submit button then it would be right but I know I could not do that with my home church.
Something you might be missing is maybe it is not automated when it comes down to supporting something you know needs support. For instance I give monthly to KLOVE Radio to help support a ministry that has blessed me and others. An amount is taken from my checking every month but I do not consider it my "tithe". I am simply helping out. In this same way if there are people that are not local but listen to the podcasts, online support might be an option for them if lead by the Lord.
It doesn't seem like there is a black and white line to follow because it really comes down to the heart of the giver.
I personally could go either way with a concern if it looking too "business-y"

I'm for this technology.
I will continue to give in church... it IS a spiritual act of worship, and that is very evident for me when I write that check every pay period.
The fact of the matter is... God knows our hearts when we give. If our giving is done with a pure heart for His glory, He WILL bless it!
We should make people watch a video about tithing before they can tithe online. :)
