The Body of Christ - and my stupidity

06.24.08

Have you ever had a revelation of truth that is stunning to you, only to realize that everyone else has had that revelation for a really, really long time and it's not new, exciting, or revolutionary in any way.  Yeah, I just had one of those.

Again, I'm listening to another teacher on a CD and he starts talking about what Christ did on earth. All of sudden I get hit (like the old V8 commercials) with the revelation of what the body of Christ should do.

When Christ was on earth, He had a body, right?  Right.  And what did His 'body' do? It walked around in the world, crossing boundaries, blasting 'isms' (like sexism and racism), it touched people for emotional healing, it miraculously healed sickness, it cast out demons, it spent time with people, it taught about the kingdom of God, it rested, it partied, it laughed, it cried. Literally.

What are we to do as the 'body of Christ' as the Church?  I guess we have our answer.

I know, I know, not revolutionary to you.

But this is my blog.

It's weird that you mention the Body of Christ. Many tears and many churches later, I still don't know why many of the Pastors I've known called me the appendix of their church. (Wah wah wah)

Body of Christ...Jesus. Body of Christ...church. Ouch....I need to go grab a V8. ;)

I always think of His hands. Drawing in the dirt, doing His carpentry work, washing feet, hammering nails only to have nails hammered into Him. Yet with those same hands he reached out and healed, held little kiddos, and touched SO many people. We're dirty and scarred but hey...if Jesus' body did it, so can we.

It's hard for me to think of Christs' incarnation without also thinking of ulterior motive. He said that he came to set the world on fire, and wished that it were already kindled. His coming signaled that as an ax is is laid at the root of a tree prepared for kindling, so shall His life be to the world. It isn't until the Revelation of Jesus Christ that we learn something of the "real" nature of the Christ and how He relates to His Church, His body (Church didn't begin till Pentecost and Christ had already ascended). He doesn't have much good to say about His body as it functions in the world, as I assume the seven are analogous to the whole. Bummer! But, even so, it doesn't seem to deter Him from his fiery goal, a thousand-year reign and a New Jerusalem- the Holy City where we will live with Him forever. A means to an end. That's how I see it. And I think to myself: what a means! What an end! Hallelujah!

I love that whole revelation. I for one can't begin to fathom the amount of faith that God has in himself to empower a bunch of generally self-centered beings to represent himself and to BE His hands and feet in the world.

The end of John 17 hit me strong when I realized that (the part about us being one as God and Christ are one, then in addition: God in Christ, Christ in us, and together we all will be one). I still have to sit and process it from time to time.
