Dare to Date: How to Discover Without a Ring in Your Hand
Overview: The church is a tough place to date. To some, the “spiritual” standard for dating involves words like “courtship”, and probable “engagement” and scary ideas like cowering talking to her father to get permission to go out.  It is enough to chase guys back to their mom’s house. And the pressure on the girl is just as bad: how do you decide if you want to marry the guy before you even get dinner?  The old standard of Hollywood Romance and getting to ‘first base’ (or more) on the first date has caused such havoc in young lives that many have over reacted and gone to the opposite extreme. How can a guy or girl get to know the other without causing fear and damage, or signing a contract? This four-week class is designed to give young adults ideas and permission for Discovery Dating: to get to know a person you may be interested in without harming them or creating over-expectations.
•    How to enjoy and help the other person, without mangling their soul or yours.
•    How to decide it you should be dating, if you are ready
•    How to develop intimacy and be beneficial, without the game playing and false appearances that the dating scene can generate.
•    How to know if an argument means communication growth or breaking up
•    How to break up without devastation.
All these questions and a lot more will be addressed in this class. Joel Asay will be leading the discussion, with notes, handouts and personal assignments; but most of the class will be communicated by a panel of young adults, newly married or currently engaged, sharing their personal stories and dating tips. It will be a sometimes blunt class on dating’s Good, Bad and Ugly. The Panel includes:
•    Richard Rohlfing and Marci Martinez
•    Eric and Kristy Upton
•    Isaac and Emily Asay
•    Justin and Vicki Colosi
•    Occasional guest participants including people like you.
Who should take this class: This is a class for those already dating or thinking about dating.
Homework Expectations: Occasional personal assignments.
Required Materials/Costs: There is no cost for this class but please register in advance online.
About the Instructor: Joel Asay is a graduate of Western Seminary and has experience in training pastors in Africa for six years. He and his wife, Cheryl, were some of the founding members of Bridgeway when it started as a church plant back in 1996. He currently serves as Bridgeway's Facilities Manager. Joel provides input into the spiritual lives and progress of a wide variety of people at Bridgeway.
